New Way for Students to Indicate Chosen Name,
Pronouns, LGBTQ+ Identity (January 21)
Dear UMBC Community,
As we prepare for the spring semester, we want to remind faculty and staff that students can update their chosen name, pronouns, and gender identity in University systems.
As part of our planned rollout, beginning in January 2021, class rosters, advising profiles, and myUMBC profiles will now include students’ self-reported pronoun information in addition to their chosen names. In the future, we hope to have this information appear in Blackboard as well.
The self-service process builds on prior work enabling students to indicate their chosen name in University systems, and we hope that it makes updating names and pronouns faster and easier for students. More detail on how students can update their information is available on the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) website.
OEI is responsible for promoting and coordinating the University’s core values of inclusive excellence and equity. We are committed to continuing to improve and simplify pathways for alerting the University of chosen names and pronouns. If you are experiencing discrimination based on your gender identity or sexual orientation, or if you know of faculty, staff, or students who are experiencing discrimination on these bases, you can report it using OEI’s online reporting form.
OEI also offers training opportunities for faculty, staff, and students in alignment with our commitment to creating an inclusive environment for students of all genders. This 20-30 minute training session can be accessed via self-service through SafeColleges. Live training via WebEx can be scheduled by contacting oeitraining@umbc.edu.
Thank you to the diverse group of campus partners who worked together to implement this new process, and thank you for all you do everyday to make UMBC a safe, caring, and inclusive learning community.
