Update: Hot Water Outage Will Extend Next Week

Dear UMBC Community,

UMBC continues to make repairs to our High Temperature Hot Water System but the outage will continue into next week. The Administration Building, Retriever Activity Center, University Center, Engineering Building, Information Technology/Engineering Building, Math/Psychology Building, Sondheim Hall, and Sherman Hall are all affected by this outage.

All efforts are being made to restore the system as soon as possible. However, all affected buildings will see decreases in temperature and will not have hot water. We are monitoring weather conditions and will continue to provide updates. At this time, buildings are open as usual  and classes will be held as scheduled. We encourage supervisors in affected buildings to be flexible with staff  regarding remote work as needed.

Bathrooms will remain functional with cold water available. Our environmental health and safety team has verified that handwashing with soap remains effective in cold water.

Dining locations in the University Center and Administration Building will be open as follows through the weekend:

  • The Admin Coffee Shop and Starbucks will be open as usual.

  • Chick-fil-A will be open Mon - Wed from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m and will reassess their hours for Thursday and Friday.

We appreciate your patience and the hard work of our facilities management team who are working continuously to resolve this situation as quickly as possible.

Kathy L. Dettloff, Vice President for Administration and Finance
Lenn Caron, Associate Vice President, Facilities Management
